💭 Mental Health Support: How to Ask for Help When It Seems Impossible 💭

Asking for help can be difficult, especially when it comes to our mental health. It may feel as if we are a burden or that no one understands what we are going through. However, reaching out for help is a sign of strength and can be the first step toward healing. So, if you're stuck and need some pointers on how to ask for help, we've got you covered.

Hotline Script

If you're calling a hotline for the first time, it can be tricky to know where to begin. A good way to start the conversation is to say something like, "Hi, I've been struggling with my mental health and don't know where to turn. Could you please help me?" This lets the person on the other end of the line know you're looking for help and are willing to talk. They are trained to ask follow-up questions to lead the conversation and provide the best guidance for your scenario.

Texting a Friend

If you're more comfortable texting a friend instead of talking on the phone, that's totally cool. A good way to start the conversation is by saying something like, "Hey, so I've been going through some mental health stuff lately. Is this something I can talk to you about?” This lets your friend know that you trust them and need their support.

Asking a friend if they’re open to you sharing your feelings – known as “getting emotional consent” – shows you're aware they may be dealing with their own troubles right now and may not have the space for your vent. If they decline, show your appreciation with a quick, “Totally understand, thanks for the response either way ❤️.”

Talking to a Trusted Non-Family Adult:

If you're having heavy thoughts and need to talk to someone outside of your family, it's important to find a trusted non-family adult, such as a teacher or mentor. A good way to start the conversation is by saying something like, "I know this might be out of the ordinary, but I've been having a tough time with my mental health and I could really use your support. Can we talk?" This lets the person know that you value their opinion and need their help.

Questions to Ask a School Counselor:

If you're looking to talk to a school counselor but are unsure of what to say, here are a few questions you can ask to establish trust and understand the process:

How does counseling work and what can I expect from our session?

Can you tell me about your confidentiality policy? What are you required (if anything) to tell my parent(s)?

Can you tell me a bit about your background and experience? What kind of things do other students come to you about?

Asking for help with our mental health can be scary, but remember, you're not alone. There are people who care and want to support you.
